The guitar is such a magical instrument that when invited inside of ones self, can and will speak intimately to a person and pluck at their “heartstrings.” The rewards that are gained when learning how to play guitar are immeasurable – there is a sense of pride and excitement that you will feel after stumbling (but still making it) through that first song that you’ve spent countless hours learning how to play.
However, becoming a real guitar player is no easy task. Almost anyone who has ever successfully learned how to play the guitar will tell you that it wasn’t easy, but rather quite difficult at times. Becoming a proficient player of this six-stringed instrument requires an immense amount of patience; hours upon hours of solid practice time learning how to play chords, scales, etc.; and never-ending persistence!
And along with all of these things you may also want to, and maybe even need to broaden the spectrum of music genres that you listen to. Don’t be afraid to familiarize yourself with the many guitar masters and greats that have graced this world with their God-given playing abilities! If your CD shelves lined only with alternative rock, or metal, or whatever, then you need to rush out to your local music store and get schooled by some of the most influential guitar players ever such as: B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Terry Kath, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, and so many others!
And it’s not just these things that you will need. A guitar is required too, duh! If you are just starting out, you may want to consider purchasing a lower priced guitar. Guitars such as Squier, Ibanez, Jackson, Yamaha, and Epiphone are all decent and dependable, and can be found for under $200. You’ll also want to consider picking up a small amplifier so you can hear yourself playing a little easier; a guitar strap; a cord; a cheap guitar case to protect your new or used ax; a tuner and a handful of picks.
So, what have we learned today? We have learned that in order to become a good guitar player you’ll have to put forth much effort in your practicing, pray for great patience, become educated about the guitar legends that lived and are still living, and obtain a fully-functioning guitar. Playing guitar is a lot of fun and extremely enjoyable. Keep rockin’!
